We toured Galicia, Rioja and Ribera del Duero in September 2014. A special thank you goes out to our guides Jen Riis and his son Marco Ruiz Jimenez. Our visit was slightly ahead of the beginning of harvest, and all indications are that 2014 will be a good to very good vintage throughout most the important wine regions in Spain. The highlights of our visit included a visit to Bodegas Valmiñor in A Guarda just south of Vigo, Galicia. Their vineyards, overlooking the Duero river and Portugal, are breathtaking. A meal, at a quaint seaside restaurant, featuring a pairing of Valmiñor Alvarino with Pulpo Gallego and Barnacles was excellent. The Rioja Alavesa winery and vinyards of Luis Canas did not dissapoint. Luis Canas owns and manages some of the finest and most beautiful old bush vine vineyards in Rioja. His modern style wines, are clean, well made and delicious. The Luis Canas Crianza has earned the distinction of being the only Rioja poured by the glass at Tickets, Ferran Adria's (Il Buli)new restaurant in Barcelona. Pago de Carraovejas in Ribera del Duero is a must visit for any wine professional or food and wine aficionado. Jose Maria has built a new winery that has sparred no attention to detail. A tasting of their impressive lineup of wines is paired with delicious food. The roasted suckling pig, that has made Jose Maria's restaurant in Segovia, one of the most famous in Spain is a perfect compliment to the Pago de Carraovejas Crianza. The good news is that finally more Pago de Carraovejas will find its way into the NY market. Previously only 10% of their production was exported, making these wines extremely hard to get.
