Le Ragnaie

The Le Ragnaie winery sits among the highest elevation vineyards in the Montalcino, 600 meters above sea level. Their property consists of 42 acres of vineyards in three different zones and microclimates; Le Ragnaie and Pietroso (both in Montalcino itself), along with a plot in Castelnuovo dell-Abate. The wines are made as naturally as possible. The grapes are fermented in cement without the addition of yeast and left on their skins for nearly three weeks. From here the juice is gravity fed into 25-hectoliter Slavonian casks where they gently rest for 3 years. The wines are then racked, blended, bottled at 14% alcohol and aged for an additional year. The winery was certified biodynamic in 2009. 1000 cases produced.

Chianti Colli Sinesi

The grapes come from the highest part of the Ragnaie vineyard, above the 600 meter threshold that the government slaps on Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino production. Thus the grapes must be declassified. This appears to have more in common with Burgundy upon first glance and sniff than Tuscany. The structure and fruit though tell a different story. This is very sexy with an alluring nose of red cassis and sour cherries. The palate continues with radiance and bright fruit wrapped around a tight skeletal structure.

Rosso di Montalcino

Made from 100% Sangiovese hand harvested in small bins, 100% destemmed then lightly crushed. Fermentation, using native yeast, takes place in concrete for 30 days. Malolactic takes place in Barrique.The 2009 Rosso di Montalcino is a pretty, fleshy wine laced with sweet red berries, crushed flowers, licorice and tobacco. The open, radiant style is best enjoyed over the next few years.

Brunello di Montalcino

The Sangiovese grapes are hand harvested in small bins, 100% destemmed then lightly crushed. Fermentation takes place in concrete vats for two weeks, using wild yeast. The wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in barriques. The wine is aged in 25 hl Slavonian Oak. Its color is bright medium red with a aromas of redcurrant, sour red cherry, sweet roses, licorice, and tar, along with a hint of sexy vanillin oak. The palate displays sweet spices, tobacco and earth, nicely balanced with ripe firm tannins. 1000 cases produced at 14% alcohol.

Brunello di Montalcino Ragnaie V.V.

'V.V.', a play on the French Vieilles Vignes, is simply stunning. It shows the freshness and brightness of this high-altitude site, the highest in all of Montalcino. Freshly cut flowers, black cherries and spices are some of the many notes that flow from the glass in this beautifully delineated Brunello. Expressive aromatics are woven throughout, adding harmony and finesse. The Ragnaie V.V. is an example of how well some of the central, higher-altitude plots performed in 2007. It is one of the most refined and elegant wines of the vintage.

Brunello di Montalcino Fornace Single Vineyard

'Fornace' is a single plot in the Castelnuovo dell'Abate zone. The debut 'Fornace' is a really intense, broad, full-blooded Brunello crammed to the rafters with ripe, exuberant fruit, notes of damson plum, kirsch and crème de mure but there is more than just fruit - layers of spice and savory characteristics of licorice, cinnamon, star anise, stone and herb, complement the rich, ripe fruit and make for a very complex, powerful wine.
