Keermont

Keermont Vineyards is located in the shadow of Guardian Peak in Stellenbosch, SA. The mountain fruit here is similar to the grapes grown at the Howell Mountain AVA in Napa Valley.

In 2003, the Wraith family acquired the vineyards. Mark and Monica Wraith currently live on Keermont Vineyards with their family. 2005 saw the start of a major vineyard planting program on lands that had been fallow for a number of years. The planting program is now complete with nearly 27 ha under vine.

Alex Starey is the wine maker. No fining or filtration is practiced at this estate. The philosophy in the vineyards tends towards the natural rather than the scientific. They aim to create wines that reflect the beautiful place from which they come and the particular year’s vintage conditions. For this reason, they use minimal chemical fertilizers and pesticides and irrigate as little as possible. They hope to achieve natural, well-balanced vineyards that ultimately yield better quality wines

Attractive light autumn yellow in color, It has fine delineation on the nose with lime flower, coconut, patisserie and a touch of brioche, followed by light oak and nut aromas. The palate defined by a central core of vibrant, fresh acidity that cuts through the vanilla and almond-tinged fruit and rich lees. An impressive precision on the saline finish.

Keermont Vineyards is a bright star on the horizon. Owned by Mark and Monica Wraith, the first of their 27-hectares was planted only in 2005, located at 250-400m altitude in the Blaauwklippen Valley in the shadow of Guardian Peak. There is a very artisanal approach here, winemaker Alex Starey overseeing elegant wines that belie their intensity. I tasted the wines both blind and with Alex himself, before he rushed off with his surfboard.

An attractive autumn yellow gold color, powerful apple, lime and melons on the nose with light oak and nut aromas. Sauternes-like honeyed fruits with great purity and definition. The palate is defined by a central core of fresh acidity which balances the sweetness and layers of fruit and rich lease. Mouth-caressing, understated finish with honey, pear, quince and vanilla.

Syrah

Deep, dark brooding red color. Intense spicy clove and fynbos aromas with hints of dark chocolate. Full, dry, spicy palate with layers of dark fruit.
It has a superb bouquet with blackberry, white pepper, white fennel and a touch of game that you could mistake for a Cote-Rotie. The palate is very elegant and well defined on the entry with palpable mineralite and finesse on the finish. Understated and very refined, South Africa needs more Rhone blends of this calibre. Drink now-2018.

The 2008 Keermont has dark berries, allspice and a touch of cedar on the crisp nose that offers elusive scents of brine and seaweed with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruits on the supple entry, ripe sappy tannins and a structured, well-focused finish.
