Casa Gran Del Siurana

Castillo Perelada's success in red wine production in Emporda led them in quest for property in Priorat. They settled and invested in two properties in Bellmunt del Priorat. The Casa Gran estate covers 10 hectares of deep flat land, mainly composed of volcanic and sedimentary alluvial soils from the river Siurana. The vineyard houses the Casa Gran farmhouse, which lends its name to the winery. The farmhouse has a history dating over three hundred years and was the former headquarters of the Carthusian monks of Scala Dei. It was the monks who introduced winemaking to this region. La Fredat estate covers 40 hectares of mountainous terraced land comprised of mostly volcanic and slate soils. The vineyards and winery have been active since 2000 under the direction of Spanish wine consultant Jose Luis Perez, of Clos Martinet.

Gran Cruor

Gran Cruor offers the chance to taste a Priorat with a base of Syrah grape, being a good example of how this variety adapts to the llicorella soils that are a feature of the area. Gran Cruor ages for 16 months in new French oak casks.

Reviews:

"The 2009 Gran Cruor is a blend of 80% Syrah, 10% Garnacha and 10% Carinena aged entirely in new French oak for 16 months. The nose is very pure and harmonious, beautifully defined and carries the oak with style, imparting scents of raspberry, kirsch, blood orange and crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied and well-balanced, its crisp, ripe red fruit interlaced with minerals and a touch of white pepper. It has a lovely silky texture, and even though I might have cut the new oak back to express the terroir more succinctly, this is a delicious, well-crafted Priorat Syrah." ~ 92, Wine Advocate April 2012

GR 174

GR-174 is the name of the lovely path that crosses Priorat. Hiking all along this track is probably the best way to feel its beauty. If you could concentrate in a bottle the ripe fruits aromas and the minerality of its terroir the result would be a wine like this. A blend of Garnatxa, Carinyena and Cabernet Sauvignon grown on river stone and aged for five months in French oak.
